Choosing Fear or Freedom

Have you ever woken up and remembered your dream?  I did this morning.  My dream was both unnerving and satisfying.  I don't remember a lot of the details and as the day unfolds, I'm forgetting more and more.  It's a fascinating journey to record your dreams.  You might want to keep a dream journal on your nightstand!

In this dream, I was in prison.  I was talking to another inmate, consoling him.  I remember clearly that I woke up with a sense of serenity.  Almost happiness.

 That's weird, right?

My Dream Coach often said remembering your dreams is a gift from your subconsciousness to your consciousness.  We often remember images, but feelings are as important to remember from our dream as the images.

I could go all over the place with interpreting the prison part of my dream.  Feelings of overwhelm, stress, not living fully into my purpose, daily pressures I put on myself to get stuff done, falling short on being a good friend, etc.  I could go bigger to feeling overwhelm with mass shootings, hurricanes, melting polar caps, etc.  Any of those sound familiar?  I feel my blood pressure rising as I write this paragraph!!

So why did I have a sense of serenity while feeling imprisoned?

The immediate association I made when I awoke is the odd placement of both prison and serenity.  In fact, my serenity was … freedom.  Prison and Freedom.  When your world closes in on you, you ALWAYS have a choice.  You have the ability to choose your ATTITUDE!  I feel like that's the advice I was giving the other person in my dream.  Choose an attitude of Freedom.

I'm reminded of Viktor Frankl's famous quote, "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing:  the last of human freedoms – to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."

Fear grabs attention.  It translates to Pain.  Then it sells us something to relieve the pain.  Fear sells newspapers, pharmaceuticals, laundry detergent, newscast ratings, gosh, even our charitable contributions!  Our world spoon feeds us FEAR every minute of every day on our TV, billboards, in our hallway conversations and annual reports.  Be wary when someone pitches pain and then offer pain relief!

We must resist!

What would our world look like if we chose to address the worlds issues and problems from a sense of Freedom instead of Fear?  Just Imagine…
