So GOOD!
Try the…
You have a signature story that you've told many times. The goal is to retell this familiar story in a way that keeps your audience engaged and experiencing it with fresh perspective.
Step 1: Choose Your Story
Pick a personal story you've told multiple times to a particular group. It should be a story you're very comfortable telling.
Step 2: Start at the Climax
Instead of beginning chronologically, jump right into the pivotal or climactic moment of the story. Set the opening scene at this gripping part.
Step 3: Add New Sensory Details
Identify 2 to 3 new sensory details (sights, sounds, smells, etc.) you can vividly describe this time to give the story a different feel.
Step 4: Spark Relatability
Include a moment or perspective in the story that allows the audience to make a personal connection, e.g. "Have you ever felt that way before?"
Step 5: Refresh with Confidence
Approach the retelling with confidence that your changes and additions will breathe new life into the familiar story for this audience.
Bonus Challenge:
Foreshadow the "twist" by mentioning you'll give them a fresh take: "You've heard this one before, but there's a new perspective this time."
The key is making deliberate adjustments to a well-known story rather than reciting it verbatim, engaging your audience's senses and emotions in novel ways.
