This 5-step challenge draws from the science of activation energy to help you sustain long-term career progress without burning out. Commit to one week, tracking your daily wins.
1) Assess Your Starting Point:
Reflect on your current career "state."
Journal for 10 minutes: What have you been sustaining?
Unpack your routines and identify one area where you're stuck or ready for change.
2) Map the Readiness Curve:
Define your goal and the "hill" ahead.
Ask: "Am I ready? Am I doing the thing?"
List 3-5 specific actions needed to build initial energy, like networking or skill-building.
3) Climb with Focused Energy:
Dedicate daily effort to "walk up the hill."
Start small—spend 30 minutes each day on one action.
If you lose focus, note why and restart without self-judgment.
4) Hit the Activation Peak:
Push through the tough midpoint.
As a "leader" of your own path, promote your progress (e.g., share an update with a mentor).
Aim for a breakthrough moment where momentum feels easier.
5) Sustain the New State:
Once over the hill, maintain with less effort.
Review weekly: What's more efficient now?
Adjust to prevent rollback, celebrating sustained wins to keep the energy flowing.
